Australian photography professional Johl Dunn lately shared his thoughts on the good debate pitting conventional film photography against digital photography. He takes the side of film and explains why it is greater for your wedding.
Digital versus film is a debate which has raged more than the last couple of years and is some thing that every wedding photographer has discussed or argued about at some time. Countless photographers are now taking the leap over into the digital globe and not seeking back. There will normally be those who oppose digital photography and that will stand by the motto 'you can't beat the great old standard way'.
Well I beg to differ, having applied each film and digital I think that I am in a best position to give some insight into this debate. This is by no indicates to be taken as gospel this is just an opinion of 1 photographer.
I am now an avid digital photography fan, having worked in both mediums I have identified that the rewards of digital far outweigh that of film. Below I have listed in point form some of the causes that a wedding couple or photographer should certainly use digital more than film.
* Digital gives you greater variety and flexibility, you can turn a color photograph into black & white or sepia at the press of a button. Whereas with film if you take the photos in black & white then they cannot be changed to color, you are stuck with that decision.
* If needed you can view your photographs on the computer inside much less than 15mins, this is particularly handy for pre wedding studio sittings. This means you can order straight away and not have to worry about coming back in a week to view the photo's then order as you do with film.
* One of the most effective points I have found with digital when shooting a wedding is becoming able to see on the back of the camera straight away the image you took. This is quite handy mainly because you can see if you got the shot you wanted. With film you don't know if you got it suitable until you pick up the film from getting processed.
* Also you can generate some stunning montages and effects with your wedding photos and albums. There are some awesome computer programs that can honestly add an additional dimension to your photos.
Digital is at the stage now exactly where the high end cameras are far superior in excellent than 35mm film based cameras and they will continue to get better as technologies advances.
